Washington, D.C. was the nation's "most literate city" in 2012 according to an annual statistical study that ranks 75 American cities on metrics like the number of bookstores, newspaper circulation, and Internet resources.
The study is aimed to shift attention from school test scores to how much people actually read.
D.C. was also the nation's most literate city in 2011 and 2010 and has come up the ranks in the years prior to that. The study has been published annually since 2003.
