A new Gallup poll that ranks U.S. states on the percentage of their population self-identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender puts D.C. at the top of the list, with 10 percent of DC residents saying they personally identified as LGBT.
This may not mean that D.C. literally has the highest percentage of LGBT residents; rather, that D.C's supportive climate for LGBT persons raises their visibility.
The study found that states with proportionally larger LGBT populations also had supportive legal climates, with most passing laws prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination, and many taking steps to legalize gay marriage.
Across the nation, the average percent of people who said they self-identified as LGBT was 3.5 percent. The only other state where more than 5 percent of the populace identified as LGBT was Hawaii.
It is important to note that the sample size for the D.C. portion of the survey was small, so the margin of error is ±6 percent. Taking that at its worst, even if only four percent of D.C.'s residents self-identified as LGBT, that still puts D.C. among the top "states" for LGBT population--and, thus, acceptance--in the nation.
