Buchanan School redevelopment on D St SE approved

A pedestrian thoroughfare, proposed as part of the redevelopment

The Board of Zoning Adjustment at its July 21 meeting approved zoning variances to allow the construction of 30 one-family and semi-attached dwellings and flats at 1325 D Street SE.

The site currently houses the vacant Buchanan School, four connected brick buildings of one to three stories in height.

Insight Property Group proposes to redevelop part of the site into 22 townhouses and six two-family flats for a total of 34 units.

There will be a 30-space parking garage and two on-site parking spaces. The developer requested variances on lot width, lot occupancy and the limit on the number of principal buildings on a single record lot. The site is located in ANC 6B.

A separate part of the development, which does not require zoning relief, will preserve two of the school buildings and convert them into condos.
