The owner of Bergami’s Pizza has applied for a liquor license and expects to open the 20-seat restaurant at Rhode Island Row by May 1.

Bergami’s will sell craft beers and about half a dozen wines when it opens at the apartment complex near the Rhode Island Ave metro in Northeast DC. The 1,350-square-foot restaurant will also sell an assortment of salads and coffee drinks.

The mostly carryout spot has generated some buzz for offering a carb-less pizza made with a cauliflower and cheese crust. Bergami’s will also offer a gluten-free crust. The setup will be similar to that of a Chipotle or Subway, with guests choosing their toppings from an assembly line of options.

Construction should begin any day now on the restaurant, Mark Bergami says. Carolina Kitchen and TKO Burger will soon join the property. Already open are Sala Thai, Chipotle, and Jersey Mike’s.

A founder of Haven Pizzeria in Bethesda, Bergami says he likes the idea of having his pizza place in an urban setting that should get good traffic because of its proximity to the metro.

“It was an area I was comfortable building in. It seems like it could be a busy neighborhood.”
