Abandoned apartments near Benning Road set for revival

Two abandoned apartment buildings near Benning Road are set to get new life.

Continental Mortgage and Investment Corporation, based in Arlington, is planning to turn two properties at 11 50th St SE and 4945 Ayers Pl SE into a total of 24 market-rate apartments, documents filed with the city show.

CMIC presented its plans at a Board of Zoning Adjustment hearing today, Tuesday, and received approval for the variance it requested.

The buildings are each currently three stories tall, with four one-bedroom units on each floor. CMIC asked for an area variance from BZA to allow a lofted fourth floor on each building, turning the back two units of each building into two-bedroom, two-bathroom units. The units will go back on the market as rentals.

Both buildings have been vacant for some time. CMIC purchased the buildings in foreclosure in 2010.

The site of the development, tentatively nicknamed East of the Capitol II, is a short walk from the Benning Road Metro station, where the first DC streetcar line will (eventually) terminate.
