D.C.'s Historic Preservation Review Board tentatively approved last week the proposal of Emory United Methodist Church to renovate and expand its main sanctuary and construct a new 99-unit affordable apartment building, with units set aside for families as well as permanent supportive housing for veterans.
The $44 million project is a collaboration between the church's development arm, The Emory Beacon of Light, and The Community Builders.
Emory UMC is located at 6100 Georgia Ave. NW, in Brightwood. The church, which is on the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites, also proposed an archeological work plan to uncover any Civil War-era artifacts.
