The Shakespeare Theatre Company and developer Erkiletian began in late June to demolish the former Southeastern University campus at 501 I Street SW to make way for a nine-story residential and performing arts buiilding, HillRag
reports.
The future building will have 155 residential units, some of which will be designated for actors and interns and others for affordable housing. The building will also contain a rehearsal space, black-box theater, costume and set equipment shop and administration headquarters.
Demolition is expected to take five weeks. The site will then be fenced off until excavation of the new building begins. The Shakespeare Theatre Company and Erkiletian still need to go through the approval process for the building itself, so excavation is not expected to begin for at least a year.
