Five new eateries to open at The Yards this spring

Two barbeque joints, an ice cream shop, a salad chain and a Spanish sandwich shop will join the massive $1.6 billion riverfront project The Yards this spring, according to developer Forest City.

Popular local ice cream brand Ice Cream Jubilee is opening its first storefront in a 1,076-square-foot spot in the Lumber Shed, joining Agua 301 and Osteria Morini. Salad chain Sweetgreen and TaKorean are also opening in that building, Forest City spokesman Gary McManus says.

Beer and barbeque restaurant Willie’s Sports Brew & Que will open a 3,700-square-foot location in the Boilermaker Shops. Joining it will be the 2,522-square-foot 100 Montaditos, a Spanish sandwich and sangria chain that is expanding in the US. It has an outpost in Bethesda. The same building houses Bluejacket brewery, Buzz Bakery and grilled chicken franchise Nando’s Peri-Peri.

Also opening sometime this year is a 50,000-square-foot Harris Teeter that will include a Starbucks and a pharmacy, according to spokeswoman Danna M Jones.

Located between Nationals Park and The Washington Navy Yard, The Yards consists of housing, retail, restaurants and office space that will be spread among 25 to 30 buildings when it is complete. That will take another 15 to 20 years. Currently in its second phase, the project’s first phase included the Yards Park and Foundry Lofts Apartments.

Forest City’s retail leasing specialists have sought to attract a mix of locally and regionally owned restaurants and restaurants that are new to the market, McManus says. The developer also seeks marketing research input from its target customer groups.
