The Long Bridge, part of D.C.'s
14th Street Bridge spanning the Potomac from Virginia to D.C., has long frustrated VRE commuters from the west. Now, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Federal Railroad Association are studying fixes, and the American Planning Association has taken note.
Long Bridge is the "worst rail bottleneck in the region," according to VRE spokesperson Mark Roeber. That's because three tracks on each side of the bridge taper to two.
The 2,500-foot bridge could be expanded to three or four tracks.
