TransitScreen, a startup that builds devices that show you when the next bus is coming, is getting a lot of press for its latest project, SmartWalk.
Just last year TransitScreen was a small startup in Arlington, Georgetown and Ballston, and was soon to expand to San Fransisco. Now, Fast.Co Design
reports, TransitScreen is in seven cities and is debuting a projection technology that displays transit information on public sidewalks or walls.
Each screen (or projection) is customized to the location. It shows passersby where the nearest train station is and when the train will arrive, how many bikes are docked at the nearest bikesharing station, even how many ridesharing drivers are nearby and how long it will take for one of them to pick you up. Unlike a smartphone app like
RideScout, the information is available for anyone walking by to see--and the SmartWalk projection system will bring the data to even more people.
“It’s a dynamic use of real-time information that cities haven’t seen before,” co-founder Ryan Croft tells Fast.Co Design.
