A liquor store that will specialize in local brews and booze has applied for its license to sell alcohol and could open as soon as October 1.
Cousins Tucker Gallagher and John Graham, proprietors of Gallagher and Graham Fine Spirits, are taking possession of the retail space at at 1939 12th St NW, next to
Menchie's Frozen Yogurt and just steps off U Street.
Gallagher, a seven-year resident of the area, says that while there are a few liquor stores already in the neighborhood, none carried the types of things he would bring to a party: "We need a decent liquor store where we can get microbrews, good wine," he says. That, and tons of local stuff. "There's a ton of great new microdistilleries around here," he says. "Green Hat, Copper Fox--we're trying to bring [them] to the attention of local people."
Gallagher says he's been in corporate marketing for 25 years but "really wanted to do something local" next. "I really love the neighborhood." Not to mention the commute, which will be three blocks for Gallagher.
As for Graham? "I told my cousin, and he said, 'Yes, count me in, I've been dying to open my own business.'"
The fairly minimal buildout should be done this month; Gallagher and Graham posted its placards for a liquor license Aug. 1 and if no residents protest, it will be granted Oct. 1.
