Natural foods store Mrs. Greens, which begun its entry into the DMV with a store in Fairfax, may be opening a location in the District, Elevation DC has learned.
The store's website had (now removed) a "Coming Soon" page for a Dupont Circle location at 11 Dupont Circle NW, the office building on the circle's northwest corner, with a retail component (where there's currently a Books-A-Million) on the ground floor. That building was
put on the market in May, and the retail space was
put on the market around the same time.
Capital Properties Group's David Crowley, who's marketing the retail level, said that "we're working on some stuff" but admitted that "the long-term is not for the bookstore."
That leaves up to 11,692 square feet available for a new tenant--like Mrs. Greens, known for its natural foods, large stock of prepared foods, and its stores' neighborhood feel.
Mrs. Greens' parent company is headquartered in upstate New York, where the majority of its locations are based. It made its first foray into
Virginia in January. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that a D.C. store is coming, but "not any time soon" and wouldn't confirm the address or other details.
If true, this would be the first Mrs. Greens in the District, but not the first foray into D.C. for parent company Natural Markets Food Group. The company took over
seven Maryland locations and one D.C. location of bankrupt grocery chain Superfresh in 2011 and rebranded them as Fresh & Green's. Late last year, NMFG closed
seven of the eight locations, including the one in D.C. at 4330 48th St NW.
